Arab and Asian Visitors Drive Tourism Growth

Travelers from Arab countries and Asian markets have played an important role in supporting Jordan's tourism recovery.

During the first nine months of 2026, tourism revenues generated by Arab visitors increased by 18.8%, while revenues from Asian markets rose by 12.3%.

These results reflect the growing importance of attracting travelers from a wider range of international markets while maintaining Jordan's traditional appeal among European and North American tourists.

Tourism experts believe that strengthening promotional campaigns, improving international flight connections, and introducing new travel experiences could help Jordan attract more visitors and encourage longer stays.

Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba Remain Key Tourism Attractions

Jordan offers an impressive variety of travel experiences, from ancient archaeological wonders to spectacular desert landscapes and relaxing seaside escapes.

Among the country's most popular destinations is Petra, the UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its magnificent rock-carved monuments and fascinating Nabataean history.

Meanwhile, Wadi Rum, often called the Valley of the Moon, continues to attract adventure travelers and nature lovers with its dramatic sandstone mountains, desert jeep tours, camel rides, and unforgettable camping experiences beneath the stars.

In southern Jordan, Aqaba offers visitors a completely different experience, combining Red Sea beaches, diving, snorkeling, and year-round sunshine.

Other destinations, including the Dead Sea, Jerash, Ajloun, and the Baptism Site, add to Jordan's appeal by offering visitors opportunities to explore the country's rich history, natural beauty, and religious heritage.

Tourism specialists believe that encouraging visitors to explore several destinations during one trip could increase tourism spending while benefiting local hotels, restaurants, transportation providers, and small businesses.

Encouraging Longer Stays and New Travel Experiences

Although the latest tourism figures are encouraging, industry professionals emphasize that sustainable growth requires more than simply increasing visitor numbers.

Tourism investor Osama Abu Taleb highlighted the importance of attracting travelers from traditional European and North American markets while continuing to develop tourism opportunities in Arab and Asian countries.

He also stressed the need to encourage visitors to spend more time in Jordan and explore destinations beyond the country's most famous attractions.

Developing well-organized travel itineraries that combine cultural tourism, adventure activities, local experiences, and relaxation could help achieve this goal.

For example, travelers could explore the ancient city of Petra, spend a night at a desert camp in Wadi Rum, enjoy the beaches of Aqaba, and finish their journey with a relaxing experience at the Dead Sea.

Such itineraries could create additional opportunities for local communities and tourism businesses across the Kingdom.

Expanding Jordan's Tourism Opportunities

Tourism experts are also calling for greater investment in specialized travel experiences to strengthen Jordan's position in the international tourism market.

These include medical tourism, religious tourism, ecotourism, adventure travel, and business tourism.

Bahjat Hamdan, a tourism investor and board member of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, emphasized the importance of expanding direct flights to Aqaba and promoting emerging tourism destinations.

He also highlighted the need to improve hospitality services, strengthen workforce training, and provide financial support to tourism businesses.

Meanwhile, Hakim Shatnawi, a professor of tourism and hospitality management at Yarmouk University, noted that the growth recorded in 2026 had been supported largely by visitors from Arab and Asian markets.

He explained that a stronger return of long-distance international travelers would provide additional benefits to hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and transportation companies, particularly in Petra and Wadi Rum.

Government Support for Jordan's Tourism Industry

To help tourism businesses overcome challenges and maintain their operations, the Jordanian government has introduced several support measures during 2026.

These initiatives include subsidized loan interest rates and financial facilities designed to support tourism establishments and protect employment opportunities.

Additional assistance has also been directed toward tourism workers, businesses, and tour guides in the Petra region, where tourism plays a vital role in the local economy.

The measures aim to strengthen the industry's resilience while creating a more stable environment for future tourism investment.

A Positive Outlook for Tourism in Jordan

The increase in tourism revenues during the first nine months of 2026 offers an encouraging outlook for Jordan's travel industry.

With its remarkable archaeological sites, breathtaking natural landscapes, warm hospitality, and diverse tourism experiences, Jordan remains an attractive destination for travelers seeking history, culture, adventure, and relaxation.

As the country continues to improve tourism infrastructure, expand international connections, and promote lesser-known destinations, the sector has opportunities for further growth.

For international travelers, Jordan offers much more than a traditional sightseeing holiday. It is a destination where ancient civilizations, spectacular desert scenery, and authentic cultural experiences come together to create memorable journeys.
